What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
― Jane Goodall
SecondLife is a colourful and glittering virtual world in which many things are possible. However, the manifold possibilities do not release us from our responsibility for real life. For this reason we have decided to donate a significant part of the income from the Kidaka project. To stay with the topic of Africa and wildlife conservation, we have therefore decided to support the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).
While walking over the Sim, some of you may notice that one animal is missing: the cheetah. Cheetahs are famous for the enormous speeds they can reach in a very short time. There is no faster land mammal on earth. Less known is how much cheetahs are threatened with extinction. The spotted predators have become highly specialized and vulnerable through evolution. Above all, however, the threat and hunting by humans has led to cheetahs now being the rarest large cats in Africa.
Only about 7,000 cheetahs still live on the African continent, not even a third as many as lions. In the last few years the population has once again declined significantly. While the fast sprinters were once common in all African savannahs and deserts, today they are found in only a few places, especially south of the Sahara.
Last chance: Solving the human-animal conflict
If we want to save the cheetahs from extinction, we must resolve the conflict with the farmers, especially in Namibia in southwest Africa, where the world's largest cheetah population is located. A project supported by the CCF does exactly that, informs the cattle breeders, constantly works to convince them and, thanks to highly technical research, creates important scientific foundations for the future coexistence of man and animal.
